Capstone Project

Great news, my capstone project isn’t gone after all. Tuesday, I went in and actually got to look at the server and it turns out that there’s nothing wrong at all with it, it just needed to be restarted. The Marriott School IT department probably turned it on, saw a bunch of messages pop up (that’s what happens when you start Linux, you don’t get the fancy screen like Windows) and assumed the computer was broken. Great news for me but it’s a sad reflection on the IT department.

On a side note, they also notified the professor I work for that another of his servers was gone (maybe like the picture kind of gone), and again…there was nothing wrong with it at all (he also uses Linux on that server).

Immigration Laws

I just found out today that earlier in this semester, the government changed their interpretation on F-1 Visas and the number of hours international students can work. While in the past it was a bit more lax and the end of classes signified that international students could work over 20 hours, they have now decided on a more tighter interpretation of the law and so international students can only work over 20 hours starting the day after Finals.

Of course, rather than notify students and faculty regarding the new change, they post the information to their website and assume you’ll be monitoring it 24/7 (maybe that’s what I should have been doing). Luckily, I was able to work with them and get things sorted out (hopefully) and if a government official ever comes and audits BYU and discovers I worked over 20 hours last week, we have a reason so I won’t be deported 🙂 Of course it might be a good reason to go home if I did get deported!

Stupid Immigration Laws!

25 Apr 2007 08:45 pm | Category: Eric, Work

So…I’m a day away from graduation, and I’m running the risk of being deported cause of working more than 20 hours last week. I checked with everyone except the International Student Office (my bad) and they all said it was ok to work over 20 hours. I guess not cause I just got an email from Brittany, the Employment person on campus , telling me I’ve violated immigration laws and I need to “discuss”. Suck. We’ll see what happens. Hopefully it works out 🙂

Under one roof

24 Apr 2007 09:02 pm | Category: Eric, Sharn

So, Eric’s project didn’t really fry. It turned out to be salvageable. I don’t know the details, he’ll probably update later.

We have our parents visiting this week for graduation. All under one roof! This will be fun. It’s also my mom’s first time to America. Hope it leaves a good impression on her! So far so good. She loves the mountains.

Anyway, this week is going to be real busy. As of now, Eric still has to finish his final paper. He also has to work on some projects at work. He can’t wait till we get back from vacation next week because you can only work at BYU 2 weeks after graduation. So he’s gotta tie up some loose strings by the end of this week!

As for me, I have to plan and write lesson plans for next week. It’s a new semester next week and that makes things a little more complicated. Plus I have a new class too. I have a journalism class. This class doesn’t have a curriculum. Something for me to come up with. I could talk to the teacher that taught it this semester (he has it all figured out) but he doesn’t have to time this week to sit down with me a talk about the class. So I’ll probably have to come up with something myself.

So, it’s just another week that I have to get over! And by this time next week, I’ll be enjoying myself in California!

Think Positive!

Capstone Project? What Capstone Project?

19 Apr 2007 01:48 pm | Category: Eric, Tech

My capstone project wasn’t the greatest to start with, but I was proud that it was finished. Now it’s gone, it is no more. A power surge probably accompanied the power outage that happened here at BYU on Monday night. Sadly, that surge killed the motherboard and the hard drive of the server I was using for my capstone project. A semester’s worth of work, gone in a few seconds…

The moral of the story is make sure you have a surge protector and a backup of your site.

Nostalgic Cartoons

19 Apr 2007 09:46 am | Category: TV

It must be the whole “moving on with life” thing but we’ve been quite nostalgic this last little while. Last night, we were hanging out with our neighbors/buddies/cooks, the Nye’s and we somehow got talking about the shows we watched while growing up. Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Samurai Pizza Cats, Sesame Street, Barney (Sharn only for this one), and The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, all classic in their own way. Of course, Yakko, Wakko, and Dot from the Animaniacs left us with some memorable (and educational) songs!

The Universe Song:

The Countries of the World Song:

What ever happened to wholesome, educational children shows? Okay, I’ll confess, maybe they weren’t that wholesome or even that educational and Shaolin Showdown’s not bad, but what else is out there?

“I’d sing it in the evening
All over this land”

“I’d sing out danger
I’d sing out a warning
I’d sing out love between my brothers and sisters
All over this land!!”

FYI This is song is by Peter, Paul, and Mary. It was written during the sixties/seventies. It’s about how America is upset with the Vietnam War and they want it to end.

“….. I’d hammer in the evening; All over this land….”

Anyway, that song is stuck in my head.

What I want to say is, RAIN AND SUN AND RAIN AND SUN!! The weather can’t make up its mind!!!

And Eric has like the superest, awesomest, most greatest one of a kind boss. He bought Eric an I-Pod shuffle! I was speechless. Well, I guess Eric was a one-of-a-kind employee. Woohoo!!

“If I had a bell,
I’d ring it in the morning,
I’d ring it in the evening,
All over this land…..”

“It’s the hammer of justice!
It’s the bell of freedom!
It’s love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this LAND!!!!!”

…obviously, still stuck.

Junior Core Nostalgia

16 Apr 2007 11:21 am | Category: Eric

I’m sitting in my old junior core seat right now and it’s making me slightly nostalgic…well…more like it’s bringing back memories that I’ve suppressed because they were that horrible. Hard to believe, a year ago I was sweating to finish Intex II and now, I’m grading it! 2 more days and I’ll be outta here!
